Frances Hodgkins left New Zealand for Europe and became one of the first artists from the Pacific to gain international recognition, absorbing Post-Impressionist colour and structure before developing her own loose, semi-abstract still lifes. She later taught a generation of British modernists and remains New Zealand’s most celebrated painter abroad.
