Academic Art

Hans Makart was the undisputed star of Vienna’s art world, staging spectacular history paintings and orchestrating the city’s public pageants with such theatrical grandeur that his name gave rise to the term ‘Makart style.’ His opulent, decorative approach directly shaped the young Gustav Klimt and the coming Vienna Secession.
