Jean-Léon Gérôme was the most influential teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts, producing meticulously rendered historical and Orientalist scenes that set the technical standard for academic painting. Long dismissed by modernists as photographic and old-fashioned, his work is now valued for its extraordinary precision and theatrical staging.
