Paul Cézanne broke painting down into planes of colour and geometric structure, searching for the underlying order beneath appearances in his obsessive studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire and quiet still lifes. Picasso and Braque both called him the father of modern art, crediting his late work as the direct root of Cubism.
