Munch revisits his recurring jealousy theme with a sickly green-faced man dominating the foreground while lovers entwine behind him in heated reds. The stark color opposition between the cold, death-like jealous figure and the passionate warmth of the couple creates visceral emotional dissonance. Based partly on Munch’s painful memories of his affair with married woman Dagny Juel.
